Alberta to Host the 57th Annual Meeting of the Ski Club of International Journalists
Up to 300 journalists coming to Banff in 2011

After two years of pitching, Travel Alberta, in partnership with Banff Lake Louise Tourism and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, has won a bid to host the 57th annual Ski Club of International Journalists (SCIJ) meeting in Banff to be held February 6-12, 2011.
SCIJ was created in the 1950s during the Cold War to transcend political issues of the Eastern and Western European journalism community through a common interest in skiing.
The Club, which boasts an international membership of close to 3,000 members working in print, web and broadcast media in 35 member countries, will be returning to Banff for the first time in 48 years.
“Tourism is important to every region of Alberta,” said Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation Minister Cindy Ady in a video-taped message to the delegates attending the 2009 SCIJ meeting in Abetone, Italy. “As professional communicators, you will find many unique and compelling stories in Alberta. I am confident you will enjoy the spectacular scenery and slopes, and I invite you to extend your stay to explore the diversity of Alberta, the Home of the Canadian Rockies.”
“Alberta is the ideal stage on which to bring to life the experiences that cannot be found anywhere else in the world,” said Noelle Aune, Travel Alberta’s Executive Director, Media, Public Relations, and e-Marketing. “The province is as diverse as the stories yet to be discovered and hosting this meeting allows us the opportunity to align our global media and pr strategy with outreach into new, untapped markets.”
Banff last played host to the SCIJ meeting in 1963. The 2011 meeting will take place over seven days featuring conference sessions, downhill races, cross-country races, and pre and post tours catered to media assignments.
“We are just pleased at the opportunity to provide these journalists with different story angles that will enable us to extend our media coverage internationally,” said Lori Bayne, Director of Communications for Banff Lake Louise Tourism. “We have a great story to tell and the fact that we are in the World’s finest National Park, is quite attractive to this audience,” she said.
Frederick Wallace, President of SCIJ Canada commented, ”We are very happy to be partnering with Travel Alberta, Banff Lake Louise Tourism, and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts to organize this meeting. There was a lot of competition from other international destinations and have been hoping to bring SCIJ back to Canada for quite some time now,” he added.

L’Alberta accueillera la 57ième rencontre du
Ski club international des journalistes
Plus de 250 journalistes convergeront vers Banff en 2011

Après deux ans d’efforts, Travel Alberta en collaboration avec l’Office du tourisme de Banff Lake Louise et Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, ont décroché le mandat d’organiser la 57ième rencontre annuelle du Ski club international des journalistes. Cette rencontre aura lieu à Banff du 6 au 12 février 2011.
Le SCIJ a été créé dans les années cinquante, en pleine guerre froide, dans le but de rassembler, au-delà des divisions politiques, des journalistes de l’est et de l’ouest européens.
Le club regroupe aujourd’hui 3000 journalistes de la presse écrite, radio, télévision et internet provenant de 35 pays. Il fera son retour à Banff 48 ans après sa première visite.
"Le tourisme est important pour toutes les régions de l’Alberta », a déclaré la ministre albertaine du tourisme, des parcs et des activités récréatives, Cindy Ady, dans un message vidéo présenté aux participants de la rencontre du SCIJ 2009 à l’Abetone, en Italie. « En tant que professionnels de la communication, vous trouverez en Alberta des sujets uniques et fascinants. Je suis sûre que vous apprécierez les pistes de ski et les paysages spectaculaires. Je vous invite aussi à prolonger votre séjour afin d’explorer toute la diversité qu’offre l’Alberta, le berceau des montagnes Rocheuses canadiennes."
"L’Alberta est un lieu idéal pour vivre des expériences inédites ailleurs dans le monde », a précisé Noelle Aune, directrice des relations publiques et du e-marketing de Travel Alberta. « La province offre une diversité de thèmes et de lieux à découvrir. L’organisation de cette rencontre nous permettra de développer notre stratégie globale média et relations publiques en atteignant de nouveaux marchés encore inexploités. » a-t-elle précisé.
Banff a déjà accueilli la rencontre du SCIJ en 1963. Celle de 2011 durera sept jours au cours desquels les participants assisteront à des conférences et déploieront leurs talents sportifs lors de courses de ski alpin et de ski de fond. Des tours précédant et suivant cette rencontre seront organisés en fonction des demandes de couverture journalistique.
"Nous sommes ravis de pouvoir proposer à ces journalistes divers sujets à traiter, ce qui nous permettra d’étendre notre exposition médiatique internationale » s’est réjouie Lori Bayne, directrice des communications de l’Office du tourisme Banff Lake Louise. « Nous avons une belle histoire à raconter et puisque nous nous trouvons dans le meilleur parc national du monde, ces journalistes s’y intéressent.» a-t-elle ajouté.
